Liposuction, which is also known as Lipoplasty or Liposculpture, can remove localised collections of fatty tissue to give you a smoother and slimmer body contour.
For the best results, you should be of relatively normal weight with extra fat localised in specific areas such as the hips, buttocks and abdomen.
Liposuction is also effective in removing fat deposits from the back, legs, arms and neck.
While liposuction is a procedure used to remove extra fat, it is neither a substitute for proper diet and exercise, nor a method for overall weight loss. It cannot eliminate cellulite or correct loose, hanging skin.
In fact, the best results from liposuction are achieved when you have healthy elastic skin with the capacity to shrink evenly after surgery.
If your skin has lost much of its elasticity, you may need a skin tightening procedure such as a tummy tuck, thigh lift, buttock lift or arm lift. This can be combined with liposuction in a two-stage process.
Optimal results from Lipoplasty and fat removal are accomplished when you have healthy skin. If the skin has lost a significant amount of its elasticity, it might need a skin tightening surgery like a tummy tuck or lift.
General anaesthesia is used for this procedure for maximum patient comfort. Liposuction is usually performed using a suction pump device to vacuum away excess fatty deposits. In some cases, a hand-held syringe may be used instead of a pump.
There are a number of variations to conventional liposuction. The technique chosen for your specific case depends on individual factors that Dr Scamp will discuss with you.
While some patients choose to have liposuction on one area of the body, such as the abdomen, you can have several areas treated during the same procedure. This means that liposuction can last from 30 minutes to three hours in duration.
Following surgery, you will need to wear a snug pressure garment for 6-12 weeks, to promote skin shrinkage and to minimise swelling and bruising as you gradually resume normal activities. This works together with your body’s natural elastin and collagen production to tighten the skin.
You can expect to return to work within one or two weeks.
Liposuction can reveal a slimmer and sculpted appearance, with the removal of fatty tissues from parts of the body where it can gather in excess. It is important to remember that every patient will achieve a different body shape with liposuction.
To find out what results you can expect from this procedure, you can arrange a professional consultation. In addition, the results of liposuction will only last if a healthy weight is maintained; while it will remove fat tissue from the body, this can return if you gain weight.
This procedure should not be viewed as substitute for a healthy diet and regular exercise.
Dr Scamp will explain the surgical procedure, risks, recovery time and answer all of your questions at your initial consultation at his Gold Coast clinic.
